The numbers are alive
In the film, researcher Patrick Munk explains how he uses computer code to translate the bacterial life in wastewater into complex datasets. By analyzing the genes of the bacteria, the numbers come to life and reveal hidden connections that, among other things, can be used to gain insights into antibiotic resistance.
Bioinformatics is the combination of computer science and the science of the living world. By translating biology into numbers, one can harness the immense computational power of computers to manage large volumes of data—such as genetic material—and analyze complex living systems that cannot be confined to controlled laboratory experiments.
